Lighten Blending Mode

The Lighten blend mode replaces the base color with the current paint color when the current paint color is lighter than the base color. If the paint color is darker than the base color, the base color is not changed. Lighten mode looks at all the three RGB channels when blending the pixel.

Screen results in an always brighter color. It is instrumental in creating highlights or brightening images. It uses the maths formula 1−(1−A)×(1−B) (blend color inverted multiplied by base color inverted, and the product is inverted). Black has no impact leaving the brighter pixel. It inverts and multiplies the values of the current paint and paper colors. The result color is always lighter than the original base color.

The Color Dodge (Special 8) mode simulates the photographic technique called dodging, which lightens image areas by decreasing the exposure. It uses the formula B÷(1−A) (base color divided by blend color inverted).

Linear Dodge (Add) (Special 8) produces results similar to Screen of Color Dodge. The pixel is checked for all the channels and brightens the base color to reflect the blend color. It adds the luminance level using the formula A+B (base color plus blend color).

The lighter color is similar to Lighten while retaining the brightest of the blend and the base color. The difference between the two is that Lighter color compares the composite RGB channel of base color with blend color while Lighten looks at each RGB channel.
